Tattoo removal cream website still defying ASA adjudication

Last October we featured a story about a Scottish web-based skincare firm that had been censured by the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) for making misleading claims. The issue centred around wording on the tattooremovalcream.co.uk website stating that “the LazerCream system is the simplest, most affordable and convenient of any tattoo removal method available in the world.” When the ASA ruling back in August found in favour of the complainant, the firm inserted the word ‘probably’ into the description of the product and also removed the world beating claims to assuage the ASA.

But it seems that, in September, another complaint was made to the ASA regarding the newly worded statements on the website. Still unable to provide the ASA with full clinical trial evidence that the product does what it claims, the company has again been told to remove the statements made about their tattoo removal cream. The ASA adjudication was dated February 1 2012 but as we write this blog, the claims are still visible on the tattooremovalcream.co.uk website.

Laserase is concerned that unless companies such as these are dealt with more forcefully, people will continue to invest their money in unproven tattoo removal products. The only way to ensure safe and effective treatment is to approach Care Quality Commission facilities such as our network of Laserase clinics. Laserase has been removing tattoos for nearly 20 years and will provide honest advice and safe treatments at all time.

Tattooed hair for bald men

A technique to cover-up baldness in men has generated interest in the tabloids over the past week. The Micro Hair Technique (MHT) is billed as a non-surgical solution to baldness but might be better understood when described as a tattoo.

Laserase is concerned that tattooing is being hyped as a genuine solution to the condition of baldness. A visible tattoo is always a huge commitment and using them to cover-up areas that are already deemed problematic by the patient might not always yield the desired result.

The Laserase centre in Nottingham – The Mapperley Park Clinic – carries out hair transplantation and believes that the media coverage of this story has over-hyped the costs associated with the hair transplantation in favour of the £2000 price tag for the tattooing of hair stubble. Mr Harris Haseeb, plastic surgeon at the Mapperley Park Clinic, would advise that interested parties might want to investigate how much a hair transplant would actually cost and also what a local tattooist would quote for a similar, scalp tattoo.

Medical tattoos on the rise

In the USA there has been an apparent upsurge in the amount of people opting for medical tattoos. Whereas medical responders would normally look for medical bracelets that warn of allergies and serious medical conditions such as diabetes, there is always the danger that these can get lost in an accident.

A tattoo is seen by some as a way of ensuring that the correct treatment is given in the most difficult of circumstances. As yet, there is nothing in medical guidelines regarding the use of tattoos in this area but Dr Aldasouqui of Michigan State University believes that medical professionals need to help guide their development.

In particular, Aldasouqui believes that the medical profession needs to at least enter the debate to provide guidance to patients on the use of medical tattoos as well as perhaps instituting official guidelines on, for example, a uniform place for the tattoo so medical responders know where to look. However, there are concerns about the validity of tattoos and many believe that it is not a suitable replacement for the more established medical jewellery.

We have written previously on the Laserase blog about tattoos pertaining to end-of-life care but there is no indication that medical staff will ever deny care on this basis.
